Terranea President Terri A. Haack Named Category Finalist for Cinderella to CEO Award
(July 9, 2019) — Terri A. Haack, President of Terranea Resort, has been named a finalist in the Cinderella to CEO™ Awards. The winners in nine categories will be announced August 8th in New York City at the Cinderella to CEO Awards which recognizes women leaders for their support of other women, their transformational ability to overcome obstacles and barriers, and their ability to motivate others to accomplish their dreams.
The “Beauty and the Beast Award” category highlights an individual who has “demonstrated outstanding, inspirational leadership in a seemingly hopeless situation by creating opportunities, supporting and mentoring, and providing solutions for gender equity.” Haack, who spearheaded pre-construction operations for the $480 million property and opened Terranea in 2009 in the middle of The Great Recession, worked to keep morale high by asking associates to “take care of the guests, each other, and themselves; I told them I would handle the rest,” Haack says of the challenging period. While it wasn’t uncommon for many businesses to forfeit paying outstanding invoices due to the economic crash, Haack worked with vendor partners to ensure each received payment. “We still work with many of those same companies today, which is a source of great pride,” says Haack.
In the decade since, Haack has worked tirelessly with her executive team to create a positive and encouraging workplace culture for the resort’s more than 1,200 associates called “TerraneaProud” in which the company supports the changing demands that come with shifting lives of associates, 160 of whom have been with Terranea since opening day. Haack says, “Our associates are family, and as their lives change, we want to make sure they know we can change with them so they are able to continue their careers at Terranea.” Since opening a decade ago, the resort has celebrated nearly 3,000 promotions and transfers as associates grew into new roles, took on new responsibilities and continue building their careers. This commitment to work-life balance and community has earned Terranea “Top Employer in Los Angeles County” and “Best Hospitality Company to Work For,” from Los Angeles News Group.
Under Haack’s leadership, Terranea has garnered multiple awards for sustainability, business and community programs, dining, overall hospitality and dozens of “best of” lists including 500 Best Hotels in the World by Travel + Leisure; being recognized on the prestigious Gold List of the World’s Best Hotels and Resorts and as one of the Best Places on Earth by Conde Nast Traveler; ranking as one of the top ten resorts in Los Angeles by U.S. News & World Report; and receiving the Platinum Choice Award from Smart Meetings, the Gold Key Award from Meetings and Conventions and the Pinnacle Award from Successful Meetings.
