World Oceans Day Celebration by the Pacific

Join us as we honor the holiday with special eco-programming.

Terranea Resort will be hosting a full day of fun activities on Saturday, June 10, 2017 in honor of World Oceans Day. We will be working alongside LA Waterkeeper, Marine Mammal Care Center, Art to Grow On, OCDC Art & Design, Algalita Marine Research Foundation, and International Bird Rescue. Guests and locals are welcome to join in one of our guided walks, painting sessions, kayak tours, cookie decorating, and much more! Kelp Forest Kayak Clean Up | 8:30AM - 10:30AM | 2:00PM – 4:00PM | $80

For the discounted price of $80 per person, you may join our coastal kayak tour AND clean up trash along the way. Our lush kelp forest acts as a natural filter and can trap trash, especially after heavy rains. With your help, we can help declutter the kelp forest! For ages 8 years old and up.

AltaSea | 9:00AM – 11:30AM | Donations accepted

Join AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles (“AltaSea”) in front of Point Discovery to learn about their new model for ocean related science, business and education. AltaSea's mission is to accelerate scientific collaboration, facilitate job creation and inspire the next generation for a more sustainable ocean. AltaSea will economically transform the communities surrounding the port and the city with a 35 acre world class ocean innovation institute that is dedicated to solving some of the globe’s most pressing problems, including climate change, energy supply, and food security. Come learn how you can be a part of the solution – the ocean is our future.

Marine Mammal Care Center | 9:00AM – 1:00PM | Donations accepted

Join the Marine Mammal Care Center in front of pointe discovery to learn about how they save marine mammals from up and down our coast. MMCC will have a representative and educational tactile items for kids and adults. No reservations necessary.

Guided Nature Walk | 10:00AM - 10:45AM

Join one of Terranea’s naturalists for a complimentary guided walk along the nature trails. Guests can learn about the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s unique local marine ecosystem and Terranea’s year-round conservation efforts. The pointe discovery activity center allows guests to participate in sustainable efforts by land and by sea throughout the year. Open to hotel guest and locals, this walk is offered daily and meets in the main lobby. No reservations necessary.

World Oceans Day Art Project with Art to Grow On Inc. | 10:00AM- 2:00PM | $10

In partnership with Art To Grow On Inc., guests are invited to create their own Terranea masterpieces in celebration of Oceans Day. Create your very own World Oceans Day project using liquid watercolors and salt! $10 per participant paid directly to Art To Grow On Children’s Art Center. All are welcome to join us from 10:00AM – 2:00PM on Nelson’s Lawn! Walk-ups are encouraged and welcomed. No reservations necessary.

Captain Gray Whale Cookie Decorating | 11:00AM – 1:00PM | $4

Join us at sea beans to decorate your very own Captain Gray whale cookie. Guests will be able to indulge their sweet tooth while having the opportunity to learn about the gray whale. No reservations necessary.

LA Waterkeeper Kayak Paddle Out | 11:00AM – 1:00PM | $80 for the paddle | Donations accepted to LA Waterkeeper

For the discounted price of $80 per person, join a kayak tour of our restored kelp forests in the Pt. Vicente and Abalone Cove Marine Protected Areas that surround Terranea. This guided tour will meet up with the LA Waterkeeper boat where LAW staff and volunteers will be in the midst of an MPA Watch Boat Based Survey. Conditions permitting, there will be a boat side briefing on the function of  MPAs, Waterkeeper’s surveys, ocean restoration projects, and membership in the CA MPA Watch Collaborative, For ages 8 years old and up.

Oceanside Painting Classes | 11:00AM – 1:00PM | 1:30PM - 3:30PM |4:00PM– 6:00PM | $80

This unique painting experience allows you to enjoy the view of the sweeping coastline and Pacific Ocean while an instructor guides you in creating your own masterpiece. Please meet at pointe discovery 15 minutes prior to your session to take care of payment. The class is located at the lower lobby terrace. If there is a chance of rain, the class will be located indoors. The painting will be of a dolphin at 11:00AM and a wave at 1:30PM in honor of World Oceans Day.

Educational Activities | 11:00AM – 3:00PM

  • Storybook reading – Ocean-themed literature will be borrowed from a public library to encourage a more sustainable alternative to purchasing. Show them a library card too!
  • “Where I Do Live?” game – We will have a backdrop of the ocean and pictures of different marine animals. Children will determine where the animals live, and we will provide a fun fact.
  • Aquaponics display

Algalita| 12 - 3PM | Donations accepted

Join one of our partners, Algalita Marine Research and Education outside of pointe discovery for an educational project.  Make your own customized shadow box filled with locally found beach trash. You will be surprised what you can create with junk!

International Bird Rescue | 1-4PM | Donations accepted

International Bird Rescue will be located outside pointe discovery with an activity and more information about how important their organization is for aquatic birds around the world! If there is an aquatic bird that is healthy enough and ready to be released back into the wild, we will be holding a bird release on property.

World Oceans Day Hike | 2:00PM – 4:00PM | $10 Adults | FREE for 4-18 year olds

Terranea Resort is committed to an educational campaign that focuses the attention of our guests on environmental issues. This special World Oceans Day guided hike stops at a variety of nature viewing points. As you walk among the coastal sage, guests may spot a California Gnat Catcher or an Allen’s Hummingbird, which are native to Southern California. Led by one of Terranea’s naturalists and starts outside of pointe discovery. Open to resort guests and locals; advanced reservations are required.

Ocean-Themed Cake Decorating | 4:00 – 5:00PM | 5:00-6:00PM | $100 Adults | $60 for children

Learn the art of cake decorating with one of our Terranea Pastry Chefs and take home a work of art! In the theme of World Oceans Day, you can decorate your cake with sea life, mermaids, whales, dolphins, or even make it look like an aquarium!

$100 pp adult – 6” cake

$60 per child – 2 cupcakes or can pay full price to do 6” cake

Advanced reservations are required.

Kid’s Club Monthly Themed Party – Ocean Month | 5:30PM – 10:00PM $85 per child

Come join the Tide Pool Kids Club for this special party with fun ocean-themed activities, crafts, and much more. Dinner is included. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance.
