Torrance-South Bay YMCA is Home to 2016 Jr. NBA National Champion

Written by Su Hwang, Director of Development at Torrance-South Bay YMCA

This summer, New York City hosted the National Jr. NBA Skills Challenge and welcomed over 28,000 competitors from all over the United States who made their way up through local and regional competitions. Among them was South Bay’s own, Caleb Ortiz, who went on to win the 2016 Jr. NBA National Champion, Boys 9-10 Division.

Caleb’s love for basketball started when he was four years old at the Torrance-South Bay YMCA and has flourished through its Jr. Clippers Youth Basketball Program. Very early on, Y staff recognized Caleb’s talents and progressed him to higher age divisions.  Although other club and travel basketball programs courted Caleb and his family, his mom Mary Anne said, “I noticed the other programs and parents of those programs focused too much on competition – so much so their children often tired of basketball all together.”  Instead, Caleb continued with the Y and so did his younger siblings.  With encouragement and guidance from Y staff and volunteers, the Ortiz family thrived not only in their basketball skills but in sportsmanship and the love of the game.

The Jr. NBA flew Caleb and his family to NYC to compete, tour attractions such as Times Square and the NBA store, and have lunch inside the NBA offices. They also got to see the incoming 2016-2017 NBA draftees.  Considering the level of success Caleb’s had at age 9, I’m sure he has a great future ahead – whether basketball or whatever he shoots for.
