Healthy Tips for the New Year

Believe it or not, 2016 has arrived!   

 

Each year, new year’s resolutions are set with the best of intentions, but not always easy to keep. Luckily, the fitness experts at The Spa at Terranea are here to help! See below for some great heath and fitness tips designed to keep you on track.

Nutrition Tips:

·         Start your day with a big glass of water before you do anything else!

·         Drink half your body weight of water in ounces each and every day

·         Prepare your snacks for the week ahead for midday cravings. Keep your snacks balanced by pairing a protein with a carb and health fat. This combination will sustain energy for a longer period of time and keep feeling satiated. Example: Apple slices with almond butter

·         Balance all meals in correct portions. ½ plate veggies, ¼ plate protein, ¼ plate carbohydrates (whole grains or fruit is best but keeping all grains and starches to a minimum including pasta and potatoes)

·         “Crowd out” your meals by adding in nutrient dense and low calorie foods to your plate to naturally crowd out heavier, starchy, and high caloric foods. Example: Instead of having two cups of pasta and adding butter and cheese, remove one cup and add in broccoli, chicken or shrimp, tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese (always optional)

  

Fitness Tips:

·         Set attainable and realistic goals to kick off the year’s fitness resolutions

·         Find something fun that drives you to be fit (ie. Zumba, roller skating, paddle boarding)

·         Encourage family and friends to get involved which will assist with accountability, motivation, and support

·         Combine cardio and strength training to avoid boredom when going to the gym 

·         Join a group class and make it a routine with your favorite instructor and other participants
