Design Inspiration at Terranea Resort

A thoughtful Q&A with Anne Wilkinson, Principal, BAMO

Terranea Resort celebrates its 8-year anniversary with the completion of an extensive property enhancement, including refreshed guestrooms reimagined by California-based interior design firm BAMO. Learn about the inspiration from Anne Wilkinson, Principal at BAMO:

TR: What served as inspiration for the enhanced design?

AW: Maintaining Terranea’s distinct sense of place was key to the new guest room design - tying in the history, geography and culture of this stunning point on the Pacific coast.  Beyond the visual experience, the guest room strives to capture the feel of the resort, the ineffable lifestyle of California’s casual-modern living, stylish, warm and inviting.  The perfect place to unwind after a fun-filled day at Terranea.

TR: How do you describe the aesthetic of Terranea’s room refresh?

AW: The overall room aesthetic is fresh, contemporary California with nods to the resort's Spanish Colonial architecture and the modern glamour of nearby Los Angeles.  Eclectic details, such as deep paneled woodwork, nail head trim, and wrought metal wall sconces tie in elements of Santa Barbara style.

TR: How has it evolved over time?

AW: Design has globally trended more modern since Terranea debuted in 2009, and our guest room update puts a more contemporary spin on the original Santa Barbara aesthetic.  We’ve added more conveniences and guest-friendly features with lots of built-in places to charge your devices.  In some rooms, the desk has been replaced by a round table that is more flexible for work or dining.  And, all rooms now have a plush, inviting chaise lounge at the window.

TR: What colors and textures are most dominant?

AW: The colors found in the coastal California landscape - neutral earth tones, warm woods and pale Pacific blues.

TR: What’s your favorite new addition and why?

AW: The original bathroom design was beloved by many, so we made little change there.  The one thing we did change in every room was the bathroom mirror.  It’s a very simple custom-designed mirror framed with a deeper blue tinted mirror surround.  It works perfectly to add a touch of modern glamour to the existing coastal themed bathroom.

TR: Where do you look for new ideas?

AW: I’m exposed to new products, projects and ideas daily, so to keep up I’m constantly saving things that interest me as I come across them.  Those might come from travel or design magazines, lifestyle blogs, my Instagram feed or e-blasts from my favorite trendsetting sources.  I always look for new ideas when I travel, my cellphone photo gallery is filled with clever solutions or beautiful details I want to remember.

TR: What design trends are you most excited about?

AW: Green is a big color trend this year, and I love the bold scaled patterns of tropical greenery that you see everywhere both in fashion and interiors.  Texture is emerging as a way to lend materials more character and there’s an emphasis on natural materials.  Roughhewn or open grain wood finishes, deeply textured wallpaper and lush textured fabrics like velvets or chunky tweeds are all part of this trend.

TR: What tips can you provide for pulling in Terranea’s style into guests’ own décor?

AW: Terranea’s style is about the juxtaposition of comfortable and clean lined contemporary pieces with elements that have a classic Spanish colonial aesthetic. This mood board has a few pieces we used that can help you achieve the contemporary coastal vibe with hints of Spanish Colonial flair.
