Birdies For Breast Cancer: A Reflection on Giving Back

Written by Dan Marvosh, PGA Head Golf Professional - Leisure Experience Sales Manager

Driving in to Terranea is always a spectacular feeling and a true privilege to do on a daily basis, but on this particular day October 9th, 2016, the satisfaction is that much more tangible. That is because today, our signature golf event, Birdies for Breast Cancer has officially become “annual” by definition, in its second edition. Pulling up into a familiar parking space, breathing in that ocean air and walking with an overwhelming sense of pride when I see our staff dressed in black and pink shirts and pink hats and representing our fight for a cause that falls near and dear to so many hearts – breast cancer.

Today we do our part to host the community golfers and Terranea Faithful alike to benefit our local partner, The Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach, by setting up an 18-hole golf tournament, complete with an awards ceremony and luncheon afterwards with live music and some beverage samplings from our sponsors. Nearly 55 people (sell out) show up for the golf event alone, and it was amazing to hear the stories of why people supported the cause. Whether it was for a loved one that had passed or even a few that had survived the terrible disease, I am touched by each story that I hear and each dollar that gets raised. Completing a great day is our annual raffle which gives everyone a chance in the group to take a home a nice prize, including an overnight stay at The Resort as a grand prize.

The golf event now completed, and everyone enjoying some live music from local favorite, Wise100 Doors we can now take a step back and look at all that we had accomplished with our communities incredible support. With no real goal other than to start something good and raise some money last year we were able to raise over $2,500 dollars for The Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach. This year, carrying the momentum created by last year’s incredible event and adding in some corporate sponsors, elevating the awards and luncheon ceremony for all of our guests, we were able to more than double our donation from last year and produce a grand total of $5,866 at this year’s event!

In reflection, while not one of us can ever make up for the pain of a lost loved one, or erase the hurt this disease has caused so many, we can all take pride that our community was able to join us for one day out of the year and do our part to fight- remember, alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.

Please join us for our next year’s event in October (date to be announced).

A special thank you to our Sponsors who made this event happen, including:
