The Natural Order of Things

The Spa at Terranea Focuses on Ecologically-Friendly Wellness

Palos Verdes, Calif.- May 2010- Designed from the ground up as a “Natural Spa,” The Spa at Terranea has quickly proven itself to be one of Southern California’s leading eco-friendly resort spas. Recently named to the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler 2010 “Hot List,” The Spa offers an experience harmonious with nature in all aspects from concept and design to products, treatments and business practices.

“As a new spa, we had the luxury of creating an experience that completely embraces nature and promotes wellness through environmentally sensitive practices,” said Melinda Milner, spa director. “Throughout the planning process, we continually looked for ways to minimize our footprint and better incorporate the natural setting.”

Natural Spa Concept

The Spa’s concept was designed around the premise that total wellness begins when the body is in tune with the cycles of nature. With this in mind, treatments and activities are designed to bring the body back in-sync with its natural bio-rhythms. In the morning, when the body’s internal rhythm dictates a rise in temperature, hormonal levels and blood pressure, the spa offers vibrant and invigorating treatments. As the body begins its slow, cool-down process in the afternoon to prepare for rest, the spa features gentle, quieting treatments that encourage rest and relaxation.

Natural Landscape

Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean, the spa offers nearly 25,000 feet of outdoor space in which to revel in the beauty of the natural world. A saline water spa pool with fire pits and cozy garden seating areas provide numerous areas for mediating, relaxing with friends or soaking in the surrounding beauty. The fitness center features an outdoor yoga platform and many classes, such as barefoot walking, are designed to embrace the coastal experience. The result is an experience that not only soothes your body, but your eyes, mind and spirit.

Natural Design

Adding to the spa experience is an exquisite spa facility designed to harnesses the energy and beauty of its surroundings. Ocean views reign throughout, particularly from the second story oceanfront co-ed lounge, complete with cozy fireplace and walkout balcony that gives the illusion of being positioned directly above the ocean. Stone floors with sea shell formations and a barnacle encrusted fireplace speak of the sea below. Plaster wall coverings in orange and yellow remind guests of the sun’s warmth and radiance. A glass wall separating the lounge areas has a ripple effect reminiscent of the ocean water, while the glass wall in the couple’s treatment area is reflective of the pampas grass found in the area.

Natural Practices

Eco-friendly operational practices are a high priority at The Spa at Terranea. No water bottles are used in the facility and plastic cups are biodegradable. The salon features eco-friendly bamboo brushes, while therapists use re-usable wooden bowls and sea shells to hold product during treatments. The spa laundry operates on a reclaimed water system and the spa pool uses a saline filter system. Uniforms made from eco-friendly materials are another way the spa pays homage to its environment.

Natural Products

The Spa’s treatment menu draws from the rich coastal landscape that surrounds Terranea. Ingredients such as seaweed, sea salt, rockweed, crystal quartz, algae and mineral clay are used in massage, body treatments and facials to help detoxify, renew and refresh. Other treatments draw from the spirit of the surroundings, such as the Tempest, which was inspired by the ocean’s storms and is designed to “stir one’s inner oceans,” or the El Segundo Blue, named after a rare butterfly unique to the area and its ritual of metamorphosis.

The Spa at Terranea makes every effort to partner with companies whose products are natural, organic and gentle on the earth. A few of the companies featured in the spa include:
