Description
9-hole, par-3 oceanfront course including short game practice area with chipping and putting greens, located on one of the most scenic peninsulas in Southern California with stunning views of the Pacific and Catalina Island.

Course Attributes
At a time when everyone seems to want to build the next biggest, longest, most challenging golf course, Terranea provides a refreshing alternative that addresses the three areas vital to the growth of golf: time, affordability and enjoyability. It was in this spirit that The Links at Terranea was conceived.

A collection of nine great par-3 holes masterfully routed and integrated with each other and the natural surroundings.

Elevation changes, green contours, artful bunkering, unobstructed sightlines, unparalleled views, excellent playing conditions and a wide range of classic strategic elements all combine to give it an incredible breadth of visual drama.

Tee placements ranging in length from 50 to 180 yards offer new golfers an inviting setup, and experienced golfers the opportunity to play every type of short and mid-range shot imaginable.

The finishing 8th and 9th holes which descend to the bluff's edge etch the course indelibly in golfers' memories.

A variety of tees and shot types are perfect for playing lessons focused on the short game.

Golfers at Terranea walk and enjoy the magnificent coastal setting, just as the game was intended to be enjoyed.

The short game practice area is a fun and attractive amenity for resort guests and a welcoming environment for beginners to learn the essentials of the short game from professional instructors.

A wildly undulating, expansive, 2-tiered putting green can be set up as a 9- or 18-hole putting course, as well as offer a great place to practice.

The Links at Terranea offers a memorable environment for group outings.

Course Information & Offerings
From the back tees, Terranea's 9-hole golf course totals approximately 1,239 yards, with a par of 27. Three sets of tees on each hole offer golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to play a variety of shots and enjoy a round of golf in an irreplaceable setting.

Architect's Comments

1

123

Long Point - establishes a sense of place on the 1st hole. A full swing with a short iron or wedge gets you started. A natural waste bunker helps focus your attention.

2

104

Boomerang - describes the shape of the green.

A short but strategic hole. Make sure you're on the proper side of the boomerang green.

3

172

Captain's Bluff - hole looks out to Point Vicente, which was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1790. Captain's Bluff also sets up the challenging nature of the hole. Take aim at the Point Vicente lighthouse, or choose to play safely to the right.

4

136

Point Fermin - Describes the view to Pt. Fermin

The broad view will challenge your depth perception. Clubbing down is advisable.

5

115

Little Blue - This a short (little) but delicate hole, looking out to the blue ocean. The name also ties into the El Segundo Blue Butterfly, which like the hole is delicate but elusive A delicate downhill shot requiring precise distance control.

6

145

Portuguese Bend - View goes toward Portuguese Bend, but there's also a lot of movement in the green complex.

A punchbowl green will feed shots from off the green.

7

150

Punchbowl - Describes the shape of the green and is also the name of a hole at National Golf Links of America in Southampton, one of golf's "holy shrines". A challenging mid-length uphill shot before you head back towards the ocean.

8

173

Catalina - Where the view takes you. A long downhill shot. Catalina Island looks reachable, but focus on the green.

9

121

Whale Road - the language from Beowulf / Anglo-Saxon lore, in which metaphors are used to describe common things; e.g. the ocean is called the "whale road". A smooth short-iron will find the green at the edge of the bluff. A lone willow tree guards the right side.

Total

1,239

*Approximate yardages measured from back tees. Middle and forward tees total approximately 950 yards and 674 yards, respectively. Final yardages may vary slightly.

Other Amenities
Golf accessories, premium rental clubs, rental pull carts, and a selection of golf and resort-casual apparel can be found at the Golf House. A casual outdoor seating area is the perfect place to count scores and enjoy a beverage.

The Links' staff includes PGA professionals who teach all aspects of the game. Regularly scheduled clinics for adults and juniors provide the opportunity to learn in a comfortable group environment. Golf activities are also incorporated into Tide Pool recreation programming for our younger guests.

Golf Course Eco
The irrigation water from the course's daily flows is treated in vegetated channels called Bioswales containing plant species with ability to remediate secondary water sources through sedimentation, filtration, absorption and vegetative uptake. Bioswales are essentially created wetlands, which, in addition to enhancing water quality, also provide habitat for many avian and aquatic species.

The use of pesticides and fertilizers are limited to those which are either organic in nature or those which have no residual effect.

Architect Q&A
Q: How does Terranea differ from other properties you've worked on?
TE: It's obviously a very unique and special site because of its location on the coast and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Q: There don't seem to be many 9-hole courses being constructed these days. What is the value of a course such as this one?
TE: We really feel there is a strong market here for this golf course. Not everyone has five hours to spend on a full-length, 18-hole round of golf. These types of facilities are just as crucial for the health of the game, and often times more enjoyable.

Q: What kind of golfers do you perceive playing at Terranea? What level of golf?
TE: I think we'll see a great diversity of people playing the course, far more diversity than you'd see in a "championship" course that caters more to avid players. Virtually anyone can find the time to play a quick nine holes in an hour or so. If nothing else, it's a great excuse to come visit the site, enjoy the outdoors and take in the views. I'm always struck by how close Catalina Island is to the Point, and the sunsets are truly special. Numerous times we've seen dolphins close by. It's a great place to be, and why not play a little golf along the way?
