Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., June 20, 2011—Terranea Resort is pleased to announce that Executive Vice President/Managing Director Terri A. Haack is the recipient of American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) national award for General Manager of the Year, Large Property. The award was given at the AH&LA’s recent Stars of the Industry Awards luncheon where hotel employees were honored for their exceptional accomplishments, service, and leadership in the lodging industry.
“Terri has a proven track record for success prior to, and within the Destination collection,” said Charlie Peck, chief operating officer for Destination Hotels & Resorts. “She is a natural leader who has significantly impacted the tremendous success of Terranea.”
Terranea Resort opened in June 2009, and since that day, Haack has inspired the resort’s 900 employees to focus on the guests and their experience at the property as a top priority. In order to stay connected to such a large group of employees, she placed a computer in the staff dining room that allows the associates to dialogue with her and she personally answers every query.
Throughout her career, Haack has garnered numerous statewide, national and international awards and accolades. Earlier this year she was awarded the General Manager of the Year, Large Property from the California Hotel and Lodging Association (CH&LA) and was a finalist in the LA Business Journal, Women Making a Difference Awards. In March 2007, Haack was recognized as “Resort Executive of the Year” by a committee of previous winners and the international marketing firm of Y Partners, the first woman to receive the prestigious award. In addition, she was presented with the 2007 South Carolina Hotelier of the Year award. In 2006, Haack was elected to the shareholder group of Destination’s parent company, Lowe Enterprises. A long-time member of AH&LA, she currently serves on the AH&LA Board of Directors representing the resort segment and is a founding member of the Women in Lodging Executive Council and a current member of their executive board.
The AH&LA awards, held at the association’s Summer Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, were presented to Outstanding Lodging Employees, Managers, and General Managers in three property size categories, as well as to the winner of the Women in Lodging Connect Leader of the Year Award and the Stevan Porter Emerging Hospitality Leader of the Year Award. Many of AH&LA’s partner state associations choose their own employee award winners, which are submitted to the association for national judging. This year’s national judges are Stefani O’Connor, executive news editor, Hotel Business; Stephanie Ricca, editor in chief of Hotel & Motel Management magazine; and Ed Watkins, editor of Lodging Hospitality magazine. The awards ceremony was sponsored by Cintas and HD Supply.
