Terranea Resort’s New Pointe Discovery Focuses on Extraordinary Excursions, Naturally Inspired

Pointe Discovery at Terranea

Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. – May 2011- A hallmark of the Terranea Resort experience is the deep connection the property shares with its extraordinary natural setting on the Pacific Ocean. The resort’s newest offering- Pointe Discovery-- continues this tradition by blending recreation with a sense of place and personalized style.

“Pointe Discovery is an active-living store offering adventures that explore the rich local terrain and ocean environment, as well as a place to purchase the gear needed to do them,” explains Marissa Edwards, director of all things fun.

Cleverly designed as part of the resort’s new retail space, Pointe Discovery is a one-stop shop for guests in search of highly creative, customized and indigenous active experiences. Its Aqua-Terra Adventures program taps into the expertise of local naturalists, ornithologists and artists to create land and sea based activities that offer teachable moments in nature, which highlight Palos Verdes’ unique ecology and character. Through exploration of tide pools, nature trails and coastal waters, guests have fun and leave with a deeper understanding of and greater connection to the Resort.

To assist guests in their activity decision-making, Terranea’s experts are on hand at Pointe Discovery throughout the day for short introductions and “teachable demonstrations.” Guests can stop by for 10-15 minute experiences, such as a flight demonstration by one of the falconer’s exotic birds or hands-on edible gardening tips, which give them a chance to learn about an activity before they book.

The unique Aqua-Terra activity menu at Pointe Discovery is divided among three main categories:

Fun With Purpose: A selection of adventures that also includes a volunteer, conservation or preservation element such as beach/ocean clean-up and habitat restoration.

AquaAdventures: Exciting sea-based excursions such as boat trips to Catalina Island, deep sea fishing, ocean kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, tide pooling and underwater photography.

TerrAdventures: Land-based adventures such as biking the Palos Verdes Coast, a birding walk, coastal hikes, falconry, habitat photography, edible gardening, horseback riding and painting classes

Complimenting the activity offerings is a wide selection of active gear for purchase.  Pointe Discovery showcases top brands such Patagonia, Split 59, and James Perse, which are known for comfortable, durable fabrics that can withstand hard runs, long bikes or even double over-head surf. The shop also carries merchandise that creates activity including bird callers, snorkels or even a timeless Linus Beach Cruiser.

“Terranea’s Mediterranean climate and stunning visual landscape compels one to explore,” said Edwards. “With Pointe Discovery, guest can do just that through fun, highly personalized activities that also provide guests with a unique sense of place.”

Pointe Discovery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For reservations and more information on its programs call 310-265-2851.
