Terranea Resort Invites Guests to Go Green and Get Involved This Earth Day

Los Angeles’ Oceanfront Resort Hosts Five Days of Conservation, Providing Guests Opportunities to Participate in Ocean Clean-up by Kayak, Pelican Release, Sustainable Gardening Tour and More

Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. (March 24, 2014) – Terranea Resort, by Destination Hotels & Resorts, is inviting guests to go green during the resort’s annual Earth Week, April 21-25. In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the eco-friendly, oceanfront resort is offering five days of green events and activities, including a pelican release, ocean clean up by kayak, and a denim drive for guests and local residents alike to take part in and learn more about how they can support environmental conservation.

Set atop a bluff on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the resort’s natural setting provides not only stunning views but also an opportunity for guests to commune with nature and spot wildlife such as dolphins, sea lions, and the endangered Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly.

Year-round conservation programs through Terranea’s Pointe Discovery’s activity center allow guests to participate in sustainable efforts by land and by sea. During the ocean clean up by kayak eco-excursion, guides navigate guests through the local coastline to help pick up debris and educate participants about the region’s history and marine environment. During Earth Week at Terranea, a donation from each kayak trip is made to organizations such as The Surfrider Foundation and Heal the Bay to further the cause to keep the ocean environment clean and safe. Guests can also take a walk on the wild side with a Pointe Discovery naturalist and learn about the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s unique local ecosystem and Terranea’s year-round conservation efforts.

Throughout the month of April, guests may take part in a Green Getaway enabling them to both enjoy and support the environment in a variety of ways.  The Green Getaway Package includes overnight accommodations; a bottle of ONEHOPE Sauvignon Blanc wine that benefits Save Our Planet; complimentary use of a Lexus hybrid vehicle for a coastal drive to explore more surrounding nature; choice of an ocean clean up by kayak, eco-excursion, or guided coastal hike for two by Pointe Discovery; and a plantable seed ornament. Terranea will also plant a tree on the guest’s behalf. Package starts at $650 per night. When booking online guests should enter promotional code GREEN at

Following are a few highlighted programs during Terranea’s Earth Week (April 21-25, 2014):

  • Pelican Release (April 21): In partnership with the International Bird Rescue, Terranea will release a rehabilitated pelican into the wild at 10:00 a.m. at the Terranea Beach Cove. Guests are invited to come and view the release and learn more about wildlife bird rescues. The organization operates two year-round aquatic bird rescue centers in California, which care for over 5,000 birds every year, and has led wildlife rescue efforts for more than 200 oil spills in over a dozen countries.
  • Harvest with Nature by Executive Chef Bernard Ibarra (April 22): An intimate gathering will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., to lunch and learn about local farming and sustainability. Led by Terranea’s Executive Chef Bernard Ibarra, the program will include a field trip to Catalina View Gardens where Chef Ibarra will share sustainable gardening tips, seasonal garden recipes, and various seeds to plant; an interactive cooking demo with the chef; and a lunch featuring garden harvest selections paired with ONEHOPE Wine at Terranea’s signature restaurant mar’sel. The cost is $50 per person, space is limited and advance reservations are required.  Please call 310-265-2766 for reservations and additional information.
  • ONEHOPE Wine Tasting at sea beans (April 23): Guests are invited to attend a complimentary wine tasting by ONEHOPE Wine, which donates half of its proceeds to a variety of causes, including U.S. forest preservation and protection. ONEHOPE is the choice wine of Terranea because of the company's joint commitment to making a social impact. The tasting will take place at sea beans from 5 - 7 p.m. A selection of wines will also be available for purchase to join in the effort of giving back.
  • Walk, Bike or Share-a-Ride Day (April 24): Guests are encouraged to explore Terranea and the Rancho Palos Verdes area via mass transit and carpooling. On April 24, guests who carpool to the resort can validate their parking tickets at Pointe Discovery for complimentary valet parking. Less driving means fewer emissions and every gallon of gas saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
  • Energy Conservation (April 25): Lighting throughout the resort will be turned off or dimmed to the lowest possible setting.  Saving electricity doesn't just save money, it also supports the environment by reducing pollution, and guests are invited to do the same.
  • Denim Collection Turns Blue to Green (April 21-25): Terranea’s Pointe Discovery will be collecting donated denim from guests throughout Earth Week to help support Cotton. From Blue to Green®.  Through the Cotton. From Blue to Green® program, denim is collected and converted to UltraTouch Denim Insulation then used in the building of homes in communities in need. UltraTouch Denim Insulation is environmentally safe and offers exceptional acoustic and thermal performance without carcinogenic warnings, formaldehyde, or chemical irritants.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Redecorate (April 21-25): Daily crafting classes will show guests how to turn trash into a true treasure. By using all repurposed and recycled materials, each artist will design their own masterpiece to take home.
  • Seed Ornaments (April 21-25): In celebration of Earth Week, Terranea’s activity concierge Pointe Discovery will be gifting customers plantable seed ornaments with each purchase, to encourage individuals to beautify the earth and plant wildflowers in their hometowns. Terranea’s boutiques provide guests with the opportunity to give back year-round, offering products from sustainably conscious and responsible companies such as Della, TOMS, and Pura Vida that contribute a portion of all proceeds from sales to charitable causes and environmental efforts.
